Went to my uncle’s funeral today. He was 82 and had been suffering from Alzheimer’s for the last few years of his life. And what a life it was. WWII veteran of the European war serving in the Army Air Corps, married 62 years, member of his church for 56 years – 44 of those serving as a deacon. Retired from a high level management job he held for almost 40 years with a major defense contractor (all on a high school education). Lived in the same house he and his wife bought in the 1950’s.
When I am reminded of the greatness of men like him and those of his generation I am humbled. It will take some doing indeed for my generation and those that follow to meet or exceed the dedication, sacrifice, and contribution of these men and women. Farewell Uncle P. Say hi to Mom for me when you get to the other side.
On a slightly less serious note, but one with a drama all it’s own, The Princess kicked her opposite gendered special friend to the curb last night. Citing lack of commitment to the relationship and just general jerkiness she let him know he was history. And in a technical twist that I suspect is not going to be unique to this generation, she did it online since he did not seem to be available for a face to face or telecon. Must have seen the text messaging on the wall.
MySpace and Facebook were immediately updated to remove all traces of his prior existence. Adios Westsider. That’s what you get for messing with my little Wildcat. Maybe I won’t need those rules after all. She seems to be doing pretty well on her own thank you very much.
